Renzo van der Bruggen


Dr. Renzo van der Bruggen obtained his law degree at the Ghent University in 2011. He immediately joined the Department of Interdisciplinary Study of Law, Private Law and Business Law as a full-time academic assistant/researcher under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Reinhard Steennot.

On September 27, 2017, Renzo successfully defended his PhD thesis “European air passenger rights in the event of delayed and cancelled flights: The impact of the European legislator and the European Court of Justice”. After this defence, he was granted the position of doctor-assistant at the Faculty of Law and Criminology (Ghent University). In 2019, publisher die Keure commercialised his PhD thesis.

The research of Renzo van der Bruggen focusses on Consumer Law, Air Law, Travel Law, Transport Law and Mediation & Negotiation. Due to the nature of the studied topics, Renzo is also very acquainted with International Law, European Law and Business Law.

Regarding his education-assignment, Renzo van der Bruggen teaches the basics on “Legal Communication Skills” and “Negotiation and Mediation in Civil and Commercial Disputes”, and gives guest lectures on Air Passenger Rights, Unfair Contract Terms, Unfair Commercial Practices and Consumer Credit.

Mid-2019, Renzo van der Bruggen joined “Erkelens Law”, a specialised law firm that covers a full range of legal services in the Aviation sector.

Renzo van der Bruggen is a member of the Financial Law Institute (Ghent University) and board member of the Consumer Law Institute (Ghent University – Antwerp University). Since 2014, he is recognised by the Belgian Federal Mediation Commission as an “Official Mediator in Civil and Commercial Disputes”.
